Awright, awright, I'm bored. And taking a meme from Snapple:

MEME, requiring input

1) Make a list of 10 characters.
2) Assign each character a number.
3) Without telling anyone who's on the list or the character's assigned number, get questions from your flist about what they'd like to know about them. (IE: "If 3 and 4 were trapped in a cave together with only a blanket and a toothpick, what would they do?" (The more random the better!)
4) Post the answers and who was who on the list.

(These are gonna be a mix of fandom characters and characters I've RPed, because.)

So, yeah, I'm pretty grossed out by the weird corporate-speak about informed thought leaders, etc., and I'm not gonna spend any more money on LJ.
Boring ruminations about potential characters, with a word-usage digression.

Eh, so. Yeah. There was someone all invoky on the Egyptian pantheon, and I dusted off Set, who's been mostly messing around in frivolous AU-land, etc. And of course I was all thinky. Blah blah blah.

Some mythological characters it would be cool to play (or even cooler to see played well):

Horus: Dude, Horus the younger has such potential. Excellent storyline: raised in hiding, pretender1 to the throne, must avenge father's wrongful death and grow to take his place, embodiment of political order and kingship. Plus, damn, you have the potential for some beautiful icons, with falcons and statues of kings. I think sometimes about playing him myself, but he'd run the risk of blurring too much with Djehutymes. Also, there gets to be a point where it's really hard to keep avoiding having my characters interact with each other, and there's no way that Djehuty and Set would both ignore Horus.

Isis: I am not, generally, very interested in mother goddesses. Consuming passion directed at a person--child, lover, what have you--doesn't usually speak to me as a character trait, although I know it's a big one for plenty of writers; maternal tenderness towards all of mankind, which is what Isis moved towards over time, also doesn't to me make for a lot of character interest. But, that said, I feel like someone could make a lot out of Isis for writing or RP purposes. She has some moments of remarkably cold and steely ambition--poisoning Re to coerce him into revealing his powerful secret name, for instance. Impregnating yourself by the dead king makes an interesting power play. She's "cleverer than millions of gods," she nips around in disguise, she's cool.

Hephaistos: See, I think about things other than Egyptian religion! Really! Anyway, Hephaistos hangs out in his workshop and makes robots. What more do you want for Nexus play? He makes golden women, gold and silver watchdogs, bronze fire-breathing bulls, brass and iron horses. He also makes divine jewelry, weapons, and chains. Furthermore, he has a complicated family life, with being despised by his mother and married to a prodigiously unfaithful wife. He hangs out with satyrs and cyclopes--and his beautiful golden robot girls. Anyhow. I feel like he would upgrade well into modern-time RP. Weird ugly brilliant inventor guy.

Wepwawet: Okay, mostly I just like saying Wepwawet. Anyway, he's the Opener of Ways, another Egyptian canine-headed god--described in one book as "a kind of celestial guide dog"--who mostly helps the dead get to where they're going. Even though he probably doesn't do much psychopomping these days, I have this image of him going off and doing sort of Aragorn-Ranger type stuff. He could make a fun minor character: nice visuals, interesting providence, lots of room to interpret a personality.

----
1 In the older, neutral sense of the word, without implying any falseness to the claim. Hee. This word has been a pet peeve of my brother's, so I finally looked up what the OED says. Modern usage is almost entirely in terms of a false claimant to a position, but I'm gonna have a moment of sisterly solidarity and use the old-school meaning.

So. Until my computer is happier, I pretty much am nnnnot going to be online a whole lot. I am filled with meh.

Bridgie, I think maybe the Djmes-and-Courtney birthday hanging-out just isn't meant to be. :/
PrIME folks, y'all can go ahead and process apps and what-not without me. (Don't wait for me--I'll just slow you down. *coughs blood, wipes dramatic grit from face*)

Meh, I say.

On the off chance that I ever post in BRPS, some things I will remember to avoid. Like unto the plague. These are things that bug me. (Note that I still go to BRPS at least once a day and fret over drama. Because I am a hypocrite.)

1. TL; DR. If the suck can't be explained in one or two quick paragraphs, it's probably open to a dozen interpretations, at least half of which aren't worth bitching someone out for. Likewise, if it can't be explained to my non-LJ-RPing husband without elaborate backstory, I need to tell myself it's probably just internecine (inter-Nexine?) wank.

2. "Your friends." This phrase sets off all my Kali alarm-chimes. I was kind of amused when she told me that "you and yours" were all wanktastic. (I have a yours? Holy shit! I had no idea! Here I thought I only talked to, like, two or three people on IM or IRC. I must be cool! Or wait, maybe she means my pets...? Because goddammit, if Pinto has been getting out of his cage to cause internet drama on my computer, I'ma gonna be pissed. BAD PARROT.) Seriously, though, it is a lame phrase. It usually comes across to me as "I don't know who exactly I'm mad at, but you seem to RP with a bunch of people and I know you talk to some of them OOC and have in-jokes." It's a fabulous way to maximize drama, since instead of a rant about one person, it's now a rant about a dozen or more people!

3. Complaining about people that I still play with but haven't talked to about my irritation. All questions of being-a-grown-up and if-it-bugs-me-so-much-why-haven't-I-said-so-before aside, that's just asking for a lot of "look, dumbass" comments.

4. "I'm just venting," following a post written in a letter format loaded with insults and rhetorical questions. Also, "I love you dearly, but...." posts.

5. Self-conscious references to the letter format. >_> Old meme.

6. Unnecessary references to the kind of sex that's going on. If it's the frequency and publicity of sex that's annoying, does it really matter if it's gay, straight, poly, kinky, unrealistic, boring, poorly-spelled, unsafe, etc? And if that is the problem--which it could well be; there's things that do squick me--then it's probably a good idea to have the honesty to say so and get right to that problem. It just bugs me when someone says "I'm sick of all the gay sex that's happening here," and then seems annoyed when people respond as though the complaint is about the gayness of the sex and starts saying in comments "well, what I really meant was...."

7. Pretty much, just posting in the first place. But hey, like I said, I read BRPS every day, so it's absurd to complain about posting there.

8. Failure to proof-read and spell-check.

9. Posting before 10 AM or after 9 PM. After about ten in the morning I get way less irritable about Internet Drama. And after nine my brain cells start flying home to their night-time perches. And bats come out, and there's the soft whisper of the wind in the pine trees, and small white moths appear suddenly as ghosts in the dim light from the living-room window...Oh. Wait, no, that's sitting outside at night in the summer. D'oh.

10. There should be a number ten. How about...eh. Trying to tell myself or anyone else that a post "isn't about anything in particular that's just happened."
Character development, lol

Sooo, for some strange reason I've been pondering weirdly static characters who never seem to learn anything from their IC experiences. I've also been trying to remember to go through and update some of my characters' profiles, and I changed Indivar's default userpic from essentially "i hate things" to "okay, actually i don't hate things after all."

Which made me want to put up a post here with blurbs about how various of my characters have changed since I started playing them. Sure, it's self-absorbed, but then other people can write about their characters? :D?

secretarybird: Yup, he's changed! He started out being preoccupied with physicality and integration with the literal, present world; he also had a very unhappy spell of being stressed by the Nexus. He's settled down a lot since then. In some ways I feel like he's sort of....become a more completed character, now, and I don't really have particular directions I need to take him. It's kind of limiting.

mr_tetu: Lulz, Tetu, he takes two steps forward towards growing up and then he sort of sprawls on a couch and says "dude, whatever." He started out as a very laid-back guy. Working in MAHS changed that in a lot of ways; I mean, it's really hard to go through some of the serious trauma there and continue to be mellow and optimistic. He still manages but a lot of the time it's a deliberate effort on his part. There's a cheery surface; it's not fake, but as soon as you push him to think about things he's really got a lot of anxiety and unhappiness. Hopefully working at PrIME will let him recover quite a bit. In Tetu's case, some of his recent characterization has been difficult, since I've had to have him adapt ICly to an OOC decision to leave a comm. It's not something he would logically have done. But, eh, sometimes OOC motivations need to trump IC ones.

ishmael_herron: Whee time travel vampires! He has a fairly static personality; he's someone who learned very young to be private and defensive and to pay close attention to the rules. That's not a personality that adjusts easily. Becoming a vampire has made him a little more open--he doesn't care quite so intensely what other people think of him. But, yeah, it takes a lot to make him change. He doesn't do well in a multiverse setting, so I hardly ever play him anywhere but one-on-one.

thutmosis: He changed a lot from being a cute precocious kid to being a somewhat bratty teen, but I feel like since then his personality has stayed about the same. Or rather, it wavers around as much as it always has--he's still in a really awkward phase of life and hasn't at all sorted out who he is. Maybe that's just sloppy characterization?

indivar: No longer hates things unduly! He's, like...kind of normal. Bit of a dork, still not very socially adept, but pretty normal. I started playing him when he had all kinds of real-world-ish issues going on, but they were the kind of issues that people do tend to sort out, given enough time and emotional support. I'm looking forward to playing him more, though.

Okay, I'll shut up now.

Djehuty: Huu, what is this God Moding I keep hearing of? Do you mean like this? *appears with the gold skin and the hair of lapis and the thirty cubits tall and the earth trembling and trees cracking before him as he walks*

Okay, no, I don't actually want to do that. But still. It would be at least a little bit funny. >_>

And that, by the way, is just from the description of some minor previously unknown little snake god that turned up on an island in The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor. I'm betting Djehuty rates at least a good fifty cubits.
